Context: STEAM initiative is the evolution of the STEM education initiative. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The additional “A” stands for the Arts. STEM and now STEAM was developed as a philosophy of education that embraces skills and subjects in a way that reflects real world usage. The key component of STEM and STEAM is integration. Instead of teaching disciplines in independent subject silos, lessons are well rounded, project and inquiry based, with a focus on interdisciplinary learning, open dialogue and critical thinking. STEM and STEAM align with the way we work and problem solve in our daily lives, making it an exceptional way of instructing and learning. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century.
